I used to be a horse vet in Newmarket, but moved to Shropshire when I gave up the day job to be a novelist instead   - working from home and not working nights is just fine, compared to the old days, and having a veterinary degree means I can panic far more when the new pup sounds as if she's got a pharyngeal foreign body: It's a long, long way to Cambridge and surgeons I trust...

That apart, I trained in clicker training for horses, which seems to be taught in a far more precise way than it is for dogs - horses, I think, are less forgiving. Or at least they're bigger. I picked the working cocker partly because she had a COI of less than 2.5 over 13 generations which is pretty much a miracle as far as pedigree dogs go - and she seemed a good breed for agility. Now all I have to do is find a trainer....:)
